Bradbury resident and resident of the Riverside nursing home, Jennifer Martin, told ABC News she was at work when she heard the shots and rushed out to see what was happening.
She said the shots came from behind a door.
“I just went to my car and ran up to the house, and they were outside and there were all these people outside,” Martin said.
She was not injured.
She and other residents were in a hallway, she said.
“Everyone was just trying to get out of there and make sure they were safe.”
Martin said she and her family have been on edge since the shooting.
“People just haven’t been able to sleep, they’re scared to death,” she said, adding that people had stopped to help her.
Martin said the residents had called 911 and she had heard about the shooting on Facebook.
“When I got to the Riverside, there were five people that were injured.
I went to the emergency room, and I’m talking to them, and then I was talking to police, and when I was doing that, I saw the police officer that was there, and he said, ‘You need to get your stuff out of here,’ and I told him I had nothing,” she recalled.”
And then the police came and said, I need to take the people away, and so I did, and we took the people from there.”
Martin’s daughter, Sarah, was among those injured in the shooting, she told ABC affiliate WCVB.
“She’s going to be in the hospital for a long time,” Sarah Martin said, as she described the emotional trauma she’s felt.
“My mother-in-law is in shock.
It’s just been a very traumatic day for her.”
She said her father was a “really good man.”
Martin is a father of two young children, including one who is a ward of the state.
The Riverside nursing facility was established in 1877.
